Pregnant Guy Raises Baffling Gender Issues

Posted Mar 27, 08 4:10 AM CDT in Science & Health

(Newser) – A couple in a quiet Oregon town is expecting their first child. So far, so normal—but the fact that it's the man who is pregnant is raising some baffling gender issues, the Oregonian reports. The 'mother-to-be' was born a woman but is legally a man who underwent transgender sex surgery 10 years ago and is married to a woman. He kept his uterus and conceived through artificial insemination.

The future dad—who is six months pregnant and runs a T-shirt business called Define Normal—says his situation has sparked many unknowns. To his wife, "I am her husband carrying our child," he wrote in The Advocate. "I will be my daughter's father, and my wife will be her mother. We will be a family." Some physicians expressed concern about possible health complications for a child born to a man who has been taking testosterone for 10 years as as part of the transgender process.
