On the sixth day, God created dinosaurs, says curator

(Newser) – A $27 million museum opening in Kentucky next week promises a different kind of take on natural history: a biblical one. At the Creation Museum, the Earth is 6,000 years old, evolution is a yarn, and dinosaurs were booked on Noah's Ark.

The 60,000 square-foot complex displays vivid life-sized dioramas—designed by the same man who did the "Jaws" and "King Kong" rides at Universal Studios—of popular biblical accounts like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and natural history museum staples—like fossils—are explained in terms of biblical doctrine. Here, Edward Rothstein writes, "Evolution gets its continual comeuppance, while biblical revelations are treated as gospel."

(NEWSER) - Evolution has joined global warming on the list of things Rick Perry is skeptical about. Evolution is "a theory that's out there—and it's got some gaps in it," the Texas governor told a little boy during a campaign stop in New Hampshire yesterday, the Huffington Post reports. "In Texas, we teach both creationism and evolution," he said. "I figure you're smart enough to figure out which one is right." Biologists take the opportunity to show kids science is 'cool'

(NEWSER) - How to celebrate "Darwin Day" in rural America? Very carefully, the New York Times reports: When evolutionary biologists set out on a road trip this weekend to Virginia, Nebraska, Montana, and Iowa to promote science in honor of Charles Darwin's 202nd birthday, one high school principal made sure to send out permission slips (two parents opted out). A museum vice president only publicized the event to teachers, not the community at large. Even so, the intended audience—students—seemed to deem the events a success: One 10th-grader blogged that the scientists "told it like it is." More»

Poll: 40% of Americans Are Creationists

Only 16% believe humanity evolved without God

(NEWSER) - Creationists beliefs are on the wane but a full 40% of Americans still believe that God created humans in their current form 10,000 years ago, according to the latest Gallup poll. But the proportion of people with creationists beliefs was the lowest since Gallup started asking the question in 1982. The poll also found that some 38% believe that God guided the evolution of humans over millions of years "from less advanced life forms," while 16% believe that humanity evolved without divine intervention. Coming to Kentucky: Creationism Theme Park

Complete with 500-foot Noah's Ark replica

(NEWSER) - Disneyland, pshaw. Soon the new hot amusement park will be located in Kentucky, and called ... Ark Encounter. The Christian theme park will include, among other attractions, a 500-foot-long Noah's Ark complete with live animals, a Tower of Babel replica, and a re-created first-century Middle Eastern village. "Make no mistake about it, this is a huge deal," says the governor, who is backing the park despite criticisms about its ideology. More»
