Palestinians enraged at Lebanese troops threaten uprising

(Newser) – Clashes between the Lebanese Army and a Palestinian militant group could spread throughout Lebanon, politicians, diplomats and refugees tell the Guardian. Anger is building among Palestinians over civilian casualties from shelling of the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp during clashes with Fatah al-Islam militants last week.

"We have never experienced violence like this," one refugee from the camp said. "Not even the Israelis behaved like this." Leaders of Lebanon's sizable Palestinian contingent warned that militants in other camps could stage an uprising if the bloodshed continues. Lebanon is accusing Syria of fueling the violence.

(AP) - Israeli troops opened fire across the Syrian frontier today to disperse hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters who stormed the border of the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, reportedly killing four people in unrest marking the anniversary of the Arab defeat in the 1967 Mideast war. The Israeli military accused Syria of instigating the disturbances to deflect attention from its bloody crackdown on a popular uprising at home. (NEWSER) - Egyptian police fired live ammo and tear gas at pro-Palestinian protesters today as violence continued following yesterday's clashes at Israel's borders. More than 350 protesters were injured, one critically, outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo, AP reports. At least 16 people were killed yesterday when Israeli troops opened fire in skirmishes as thousands of protesters marched from Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and the Left Bank on the annual Palestinian day of "nakba," or catastrophe, marking Israeli's 1948 independence. (AP) - Israeli troops clashed with Arab protesters today along three hostile borders, including the frontier with Syria, leaving 16 people dead and dozens more wounded in an unprecedented wave of demonstrations marking a Palestinian day of mourning for their defeat at Israel's hands in 1948. Along Israel's border with Syria, thousands of protesters stormed the fence and hundreds burst through, pelting soldiers with stones, the military said. (NEWSER) - Syrians fleeing across the border into Lebanon this weekend got a rude awakening: Lebanese security forces rounded them up and sent them right back.
