Stern Asian capital set to emerge as a tourist haven filled with casinos, hotels, and amusement parks

(Newser) – Singapore is transforming itself from a dull metropolis famous for its draconian cleanliness into an exciting, vibrant, tourists' paradise, Time reports. Plans are percolating for casinos, skyscrapers, amusement parks, and a multi-billion dollar residential and commercial real estate development located downtown.

As young Singaporeans leave to find jobs overseas and the birth rate wanes, the government is looking to entice millions of immigrants, with the goal of a 25% population increase over the next few decades. Natives are worried new arrivals will take their jobs; in one poll, 43% said they believe the government is more concerned with foreigners.

(NEWSER) - Thanks to sex selection, areas of China and India are set to see a 10%-20% excess of males over the next two decades, a study finds. The nations' preference for boys, coupled with the increasing use of ultrasound equipment over the past 20 years, is tipping the scales, reports the Los Angeles Times . (NEWSER) - Illegal gambling dens across Asia are being rolled up in a post-World Cup crackdown. Police in China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore have found almost 800 illegal gambling dens, arrested more than 5,000 people, and seized almost $10 million in bets, the BBC reports . The establishments handled more than $155 million in bets during the tournament, according to Interpol. Men looking for city of 25,000 women badger Swedish tourist authorities

(NEWSER) - Rumors of a city of 25,000 lesbians have led hordes of men to contact Swedish tourist authorities and swamp the nation's Internet providers. Chinese media especially have spread the tale of “Chako Paul City,” supposedly founded in 1820 in northern Sweden by a man-hating widow who banned males, reports Australia's Daily Telegraph. Inhabitants then turned to lesbianism “because they could not suppress their sexual needs,” goes one recent account in China’s Harbin News service. More»
