After Article, Teacher's Hospital Bill Goes From $108,951 to $332

A teacher who found himself hit with a $108,951.31 hospital bill after suffering a heart attack went to the media—and it paid off. After NPR and Kaiser Health News reported Drew Calver's story as part of their "Bill of the Month" series, St. David's Medical Center in Austin, Texas, initially said it would lower his amount owed to $782.29. Then the medical center pushed it down even further to $332.29, NPR reports. Calver paid it over the phone. "It feels great that this is over for me and my family, but this isn't just about my bill," he says. "I don't feel any consumer should have to go through this."
