Speed Racer Crashes at Weekend Box Office

(Newser) – Speed Racer stalled in its weekend box office debut, banking just a fifth of its $100 million budget and allowing Iron Man to maintain top spot and earn another $50 million. Racer ran neck-and-neck with the comedy What Happens in Vegas, which also scored $20 million. Made of Honor and Baby Mama complete the top 5.

    Some Americans seeking a break from economic news may be sitting in the dark in movie theaters—but they're apparently not eating their Raisinets. That's the news from two cinema companies reporting a major munchie drop off. Conventional wisdom holds that people can always afford a movie. Not so. Admission revenue fell 6.9% and concession revenue decreased 8.3% at Carmike Cinemas' 250 theaters this quarter over last year, reports Reuters. "This is a challenging economic environment.," said a spokesman.
