Barack Obama's campaign isn’t missing a beat, Politico notes, on publicizing John McCain’s dealings with a man who once said of rape, “As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.” Said an Obama rep of accepting $300,000 from Clayton Williams, “That’s an interesting stand to take as they ramp up their efforts to win over women voters.”

Confronted with the Texas oilman’s remarks—made while he was GOP gubernatorial nominee in 1990, running against Ann Richards—McCain moved a fundraiser from Williams’ house, but will still benefit from the money. "To whatever extent McCain would have owed Williams favors pre-'cancellation,'" Matthew Yglesias writes in an Atlantic blog, "he still owes him favors now." (More John McCain stories.)
