Sarko Looks Blotto at G8

After lunch with Putin, French boss sways and slurs at press conference

(Newser) – Vladimir Putin may have tested out some liquid diplomacy at the G8 summit. After a long meeting with the Russian leader, freshly elected French president Nicolas Sarkozy showed up late to a press conference and appeared inebriated, fumbling for words, giggling, and swaying at the podium.

"Please excuse me for being late," he said, looking blearily at the gathered reporters. "It was due to the length of my discussion with Mr. Putin." Sarko then hiccuped and asked, "So what do you want? Me to answer questions?" The clip is a hit on YouTube, where users guess whether Putin replaced Sarkozy's water with vodka. The Élysée says it won't dignify the speculation with comment.
