Man Held After Girlfriend Decapitated in Greece

(Newser) – A man on the Greek island of Santorini allegedly carried his girlfriend's head through the streets before police shot and apprehended him, the BBC reports. The 35-year-old is said to have decapitated his girlfriend, a teacher in her 20s, slashed an officer, and stolen a police jeep—which he crashed into two women, injuring both seriously. Police have not named him but say he has a history of domestic violence.

"He was walking around, carrying her head and telling the astonished villagers not to stop him," a police officer told Reuters. "They knew he had psychological problems ... but they didn't expect he would reach this point."

(AP) - Greece's parliament has approved an austerity and debt-relief bill, crucial for the country to avoid bankruptcy and remain in the eurozone. Lawmakers voted today in favor of the bill that imposes harsh new austerity measures in return for a $171 billion new bailout agreement and related deal with private creditors to shave $132 billion off the country's national debt. Protesters clash with police in Athens

(NEWSER) - Greece's major unions launched a 48-hour general strike today, protesting the latest austerity cuts designed to appease international creditors. Thousands of people poured into the streets of Athens, the AP reports, and demonstrations occasionally got ugly; outside of Parliament, dozens of youths hurled fire bombs and stones at police, who responded by firing tear gas. So far no arrests or injuries have been reported. About 7,000 took part in that protest, according to police, while a separate Communist demonstration drew 10,000. More»

Greek Deputy Minister Resigns Over Cuts

Yiannis Koutsoukos not a fan of the new measures

(AP) - Greece's deputy labor minister has resigned to protest the agreement on new austerity measures. Yiannis Koutsoukos issued a statement today saying he opposes the implementation of cutbacks and reforms agreed to earlier today to secure the country's $172 billion international rescue loan lifeline. In a letter to PM Lucas Papademos, he called the measures not just "tough" but "painful for working people," notes Reuters . Koutsoukos is a lawmaker with the majority Socialist party. More»

Will allow country to secure vital bailout

(AP) - Greece says it has struck a deal with its bailout creditors on adopting harsh new austerity measures needed to avoid a disastrous bankruptcy. Prime Minister Lucas Papademos' office says negotiations with representatives of the EU, the European Central Bank, and the IMF have been successfully concluded. A statement from Papademos' office today said leaders of the parties in the coalition government have accepted the result of talks with the three organizations, collectively known as the troika.
