Authorities take away American protesters in Beijing park

(Newser) – Chinese police arrested five American protesters who blocked the entrance to a park in Beijing while shouting "Free Tibet!", Reuters reports. The demonstrators were associated with Students for a Free Tibet, who said there were eight in total. It remains unknown where the protesters have been taken.

A British television reporter also said he had been pushed and dragged into a police van, and was briefly detained there; the IOC said it would look into the incident.

(AP) - An 18-year-old Tibetan nun has set herself on fire in western China in the latest such protest against Beijing's handling of the vast ethnic Tibetan regions it rules, an overseas activist group said today. (NEWSER) - Following a series of violent clashes in Ganzi, China appears to have put Tibet on lockdown. Phone and Internet have been cut, and military and police are pouring into the region to restrict movement. The west of Sichuan province, which borders Tibet and has a large population of ethnic Tibetans, saw at least two people killed and dozens more wounded in clashes between protesters and security forces on Monday and Tuesday. The leader of Tibet's exiled government today lambasted the crackdown, reports the AP , telling Beijing, "You will never address the genuine grievances of Tibetans and restore stability in Tibet through violence and killing." Monk's Body Paraded After Self-Immolation

Protesters seized body from police station, then carried through streets

(NEWSER) - The body of a monk who killed himself yesterday morning by drinking kerosene, dousing himself, and lighting himself on fire was taken from the police in western China by hundreds of angry Tibetans and paraded through the streets, reports the AP . Police initially refused to hand over the body, but relented after protesters smashed the police station's windows and doors. The official Xinhua News Agency confirmed yesterday's death, and identified the monk as Nyage Sonamdrugyu, 40. It said his body was returned to his relatives so a traditional funeral could be held. It's the 12th self-immolation in Tibet since March

(NEWSER) - The most salient detail in a Washington Post article about the rising number of self-immolations among Tibetan monks and nuns: Chinese troops in the region are now carrying fire extinguishers as part of their regular riot-control gear. It's become necessary because 12 men and women have set themselves on fire since March, the latest coming yesterday when a former monk did so in the Chinese-ruled autonomous region. Tsewang Norbu dies in self-immolation protest

(NEWSER) - A Tibetan Buddhist monk set himself on fire today in southwest China while calling out the Dalai Lama's name, the latest in a string of self-immolation protests in that country as well as North Africa. Tsewang Norbu, 29, "drank petrol, sprayed petrol on himself, and then set himself on fire," says the Free Tibet organization in a statement. "He was heard calling out: 'We Tibetan people want freedom,' 'Long live the Dalai Lama,' and 'Let the Dalai Lama Return to Tibet.' He is believed to have died at the scene." More»
