Winners, Losers in Brady Injury

(Newser) – Tom Brady’s season-ending injury sent shockwaves through the NFL —and not everyone was celebrating. Don Banks breaks down the winners and losers in Sport Illustrated:

  • Winner: The Chargers —The Patriots always seem to knock San Diego out of the playoffs.
  • Loser: The NFL —The league loses its face, and reigning MVP.
  • Winners: The Bills, Jets, and Titans —The other AFC East teams now have a dramatically better chance of taking the division, while the Titans’ wildcard hopes improve.

  • Loser: Bill Belichick —“The Genius” was 5-13 before Brady.
  • Winner: Matt Cassel —Gets an offensive machine for his first start since high school.
  • Loser: Colts/Patriots rivalry —With Indy also looking sorry, Week 9 could be a snoozer.
  • Winners: Patriots running backs —Likely to see more carries in post-Brady world.
  • Losers: Patriots receivers —Without Brady, no one is matching last year’s numbers.

Jay Feely kicked a 34-yard field goal on the first series of overtime to beat New England 34-31. Feely's kick came after the Patriots had tied the game on Matt Cassel's pass to Randy Moss with one second left in regulation. The win broke a tie for the division lead and gave the visiting Jets (7-3) sole possession of first place for the first time since 2001. More »

    Unbeaten Titans Top Bears Despite Ground Game The Tennessee Titans secured a stunning 9-0 record today and the Indianapolis Colts stole a much-needed win in NFL action:

    • The Titans overcame a franchise-low 20-yard rushing game to beat the Chicago Bears 21-14 and stay undefeated, the AP reports.
    • Peyton Manning tossed three TD passes in a 24-20 comeback victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers—the last with 3:04 to go, after Ben Roethlisberger's second interception, USA Today reports.

    Giants Upend Tumbling Cowboys Tony Romo's injured pinkie spelled doom for the Dallas Cowboys again as the New York Giants pummeled them 35-14 today, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. In other games:

    • The Tennessee Titans continued their unbeaten streak by outlasting the Green Bay Packers 19-16 in overtime, USA Today reports.
    • The Atlanta Falcons held the Oakland Raiders to no first downs and negative yards in the first half of a debilitating 24-0 victory.

    Brady Out for Season With Torn ACL Patriots QB Tom Brady is likely out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Coach Bill Belichick said he had no news on Brady's knee, which buckled when Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard struck it in today's 17-10 Patriots victory—but one team source told Yahoo! Sports, "It's bad. We’re going to have to play without him,” and the Boston Herald is quoting Brett Favre and another Jet referring to an ACL injury.
