Put aside the arugula and forget "priggish" counter-attacks on Sarah Palin, Thomas Frank advises Democrats. The way to win the culture war being waged by Republicans is to point out what GOP dominance over the last quarter century has done: removed fiscal safeguards and brought us "to the edge of Armageddon." They've made it easier to mint millionaires while average people's wages have been held down.

This time there's no way for the GOP to blame the failing financial markets on their favorite culprits, over-regulation or unions. They've been in the driver's seat, and it's their mess taxpayers are being asked to clean up, he writes. As recently as March, he notes, John McCain was still calling "for more deregulation in response to the crisis." Frank says it's time for the Democrats to strike back at this folly.
