Wisconsin Band Busted for Hazing

(Newser) – For the first time in 40 years, horns won’t blow at a University of Wisconsin football game tonight: The marching band’s been suspended for alleged hazing, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The school hasn't disclosed details, but the band director said alcohol and “inappropriate sexual behavior” were involved. “The allegations were serious enough that there needed to be some action right away,” he said.

The Badgers play Ohio State tonight in a nationally televised game. School officials will use canned music, videos, and other material to fill the pre-game, half-time, and the post-game vacuum. "We really can't replace what our marching band brings to the table," one school official said. "We're not going to try."

Over the weekend, Robert Champion, 26, collapsed outside a charter bus after a football game in which the band performed at half-time. He died in the hospital soon after and police say hazing was a factor in his death, the Orlando Sentinel reports. More»

(NEWSER) - Lance Cpl. Jacob Jacoby admitted to punching and kicking fellow Marine Harry Lew before Lew committed suicide , and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Jacoby, who pleaded guilty to assault, will also see his rank reduced to private first class. Prosecutors withdrew additional charges that Jacoby threatened and humiliated Lew, and the judge in Jacoby's court-martial says she saw no evidence that Jacoby's actions caused Lew's suicide. Death caused by 'blunt force trauma sustained during hazing incident'

(NEWSER) - A Florida A&M University drum major who died after being hazed was indeed killed by that hazing, and his death has been ruled a homicide. The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner's Office today revealed that Robert Champion's death was the result of "blunt force trauma sustained during a hazing incident." The autopsy "revealed extensive contusions of his chest, arms, shoulder, and back with extensive hemorrhage" and signs of "a significant rapid blood loss" stemming from the injuries he sustained, reports the Orlando Sentinel . Sheriff's investigators plan to meet with the state attorney's office to determine whether criminal charges should be filed. More»

Humiliated fellow Marine shot himself in Afghanistan

(NEWSER) - Three Marines accused of hazing a fellow Marine so harshly that he committed suicide are to be court-martialed, the Marine Corps says. Harry Lew, a 21-year-old from Hawaii, shot himself in a foxhole in Afghanistan earlier this year after he was allegedly attacked and humiliated by the trio. The three Marines face charges including hazing, assault, cruelty and maltreatment, and dereliction, the San Jose Mercury News reports. More»
