Phillies Win Series Opener

(Newser) – Solid pitching and a dose of power gave the Phillies Game 1 of the World Series tonight in Tampa Bay. Chad Utley hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and ace Cole Hamels pitched 7 strong innings in Philadelphia's 3-2 win, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. Carl Crawford homered for the Rays, who will try to even things up Thursday night.

"If anywhere in the country has a drought, just bring me in and I'll fix that," Verlander said after the Rangers beat him 3-2 last night in Game 1 of the AL championship series opener. Before the game was interrupted twice by rain for a total of 1 hour, 50 minutes in the top of the fifth inning, Nelson Cruz broke a postseason slump with a home run and the defending AL champions scored all of their runs off Verlander.
