Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter, the 2005 Cy Young winner, will undergo Tommy John surgery next week and miss the rest of this season and part of next, the team said yesterday. The 2006 World Series star and Opening Day starter hit the DL on April 2 and hasn't started in the majors since.

Shoulder surgery benched Carpenter for most of '02 and '03, and bursitis landed him on the DL last year before his triumphant postseason run. Swelling developed during minor-league rehab within the past 10 days. The reeling Cards didn't sound surprised: "t's about the way the rest of the season has gone here," said Jason Isringhausen.
