Finally, It's a Cleaning Fluid You Can Drink

Electrolyzed water washes, degreases, cures athlete's foot

(Newser) – In essence, it’s salt water, but a new drinkable cleaning fluid has been deemed a “miracle liquid,” the Los Angeles Times reports. So-called electrolyzed water is the result of sending current through a mixture of table salt and water. The cleaner, degreaser, and athlete’s foot cure has been used for years in Russia and Japan, but is only now getting popular in the US.

“I didn’t believe in it at first because it didn’t have foam or any scent,” said one housekeeper. “But I can tell you it works. My rooms are clean.”

It's green. It saves money. And it's the right thing to do. It's almost like fantasy. - Glenn Epstein, executive assistant, Sheraton Delfina

Sounds like that green Gatorade-like stuff that replaces water in the movie "Idiocracy". Reply

Just like with all of these new "green" cleaners, more than likely you're losing disinfecting power, b/c there are none in the solutions! Now I know you should use antibacterial cleaning agents all the time b/c bacteria develop immunity, but if I'm cleaning up a contaminated area, I don't want to use something that I can drink (allegedly) or smell good or a pretty color-I want something that is going to kill germs! You can use H20 to clean glass. - no Windex/amonia needed. (I always use cold for some reason) Reply

Passing current through salt water will leave a solution of NaOH (lye) and generate H2 (hydrogen) as a gas and Cl2 (Clorine) also as a very toxic gas...If these gases are mixed they can produce a very violent explosive triggered by a single photon of UV light...DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME...Btw the results of the explosion produces HCl as a gas and when mixed with water yields Hydrochloric acid, again very nasty stuff...
