Recession: Tastes Like Chicken

(Newser) – The recession has consumers foregoing pricey beef and pork for cheaper chicken, the chairman of grocery chain Safeway tells Bloomberg. “We’re seeing more shifts in the meat category to cheaper meats—ground beef and chicken—than we saw earlier in the year,” Steven Burd says, part of “a trading down virtually across the board.”

Giant bags of rice, giant noodle bundles, cheap cuts of meat cut into bite sizes along with some vegetables to add some flavor. Feed a family cheaply for a month or more on a bag of rice.
