Sen. Crotchety Routine Is Old

Senator's attacks on federal spending starting to seem like sour grapes

(Newser) – John McCain's complaining about the omnibus spending bill is starting to sound more like he's trying to fight the election again instead of fighting pork-barrel spending, Mike Madden writes in Salon. The senator appears to be going out of his way to remind people how much he disagrees with President Obama, Madden writes—even mastering Twitter to post dozens of snarky comments about the bill.

Even if McCain really is only continuing his long-running crusade against federal spending, Madden writes, he should realize that many of the earmarks he is lampooning fund important scientific research—and many others came from the GOP. The senator should also remember, Madden writes, that "voters evidently weren't sufficiently moved by McCain's anti-earmark outrage to put him in office."

In light of the massive problems the government is trying to deal with, it's hard for anyone except McCain to get that worked up over the earmark battle. He and Obama covered all this ground during the campaign. - Mike Madden

Gotta love that McCain and the other Repubs are moving to give Obama line item veto. After all, derailing a perfectly good bill because it's only 98% fine is ridiculous and slows things down when we need to be fast. So I'm so glad the Repubs figured out the real solution: Give Obama line item veto and no excuses. Since even Bush wanted line item veto and I'm sure Obama does also, the Dems and Repubs are in agreement. Should pass easily!
