Mandelson pelted with custard as he arrives at environment meeting

(Newser) – An environmental protester threw a cup of green slimy liquid onto one of Britain's most powerful ministers this morning, reports the Times of London. Peter Mandelson, the business secretary, was arriving at a meeting when he was doused with a mix of custard and green food dye. The demonstrator was protesting against the proposed expansion of Heathrow Airport.

Lord Mandelson, who did not have any security detail, went inside to clean up and emerged five minutes later, calling the protest "adolescent." The demonstrator, a 29-year-old woman belonging to a group called Plane Stupid, later told the media that "the only thing green about Peter Mandelson is the slime coursing through his veins."

(NEWSER) - Thousands of protesters marched through London today to protest the latest hike in British university tuition, as hordes of police watched and guided them. Four thousand officers were deployed to police a crowd that they pegged at 2,000-strong, but that organizers estimated contained closer to 10,000 people. The demonstrations were largely peaceful, but police arrested 24 people, most for breach of the peace and similar offenses, the AP reports. More»

(NEWSER) - The man who would be king has turned tree-hugger on YouTube. Prince William has made a videotaped plea to Brits to pick their favorite green spaces for protection. Local authorities have chosen several sites for protection as part of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge, which is aimed at blocking development at popular open areas, notes the Telegraph . Too many sites have been nominated, however, and William urges Brits to vote on their favorites online. "Many of these sites may be lost in the future if they are not protected," warns the 29-year-old prince. "Protecting these sites will mean that millions of people for generations can take part in sport, play, and enjoyment." William's message comes on the heels of the British government's proposed planning reforms, generally viewed as paving the way for new development. More»
