Binghamton Police Chief: 'He Must Have Been a Coward'

Share

(Newser) – Jiverly Voong, the 41-year-old gunman who took 14 lives including his own at an upstate New York immigrant center, was wearing body armor during the attack, the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reports. Binghamton’s police chief said the armor indicated Voong may have intended to take on police, but he speculated that the sound of sirens spooked him into suicide. “He must have been a coward,” the chief said.

As details of Voong’s emerged, those close to him said they weren’t surprised he turned to violence. People mocked his poor English, they said, making him feel “degraded.” Voong was also investigated by Binghamton police in 1999 for suspicion of plotting a bank heist. He appears to have recently worked in California for a sushi company, where his boss said he was antisocial but a good worker.

It would be an interesting thing to work with profiler's and determine the personality nuances that lead people like this to violence. Even better to help everyone else learn to identify the signs. It can't be that he was a 'loner' though... there's too many loners that are kind and peace loving. Reply

BTW, I can't pinpoint it, but this police chief sounds like an idiot. Reply

Obviously he was a coward... his actions tell that story for sure... His gun collection paired with his threats against the President should have been a good warning to people Reply

I think the Chief of Police is very lucky this guy is such a "coward" otherwise there might have been some dead police officers to add to this tragedy. This person was heavily armed, wearing body armor, knew the location well and was willing to kill anyone and everyone. This situation is the nightmare of any police officer. Reply

something i dont get--there was a swat team there, how come they waited 2 to 3 hours before they entered the building? I heard someone say they thought it was too dangerous for the police to enter. How about the victims who were inside. It could have been possible for this guy to take his time about shooting people if the police were not pressuring him and sitting out side for 2 hours. I thought swat teams were to break and enter as quickly as possible. Maybe im missing something? Reply
