Obama Approval Hits 66% High in New Poll

Prez lauded on foreign policy, economy, but not from GOP voters

(Newser) – President Obama's approval ratings are at the highest since he took office, according to the latest CBS News/New York Times poll. Of those surveyed, 66% approve of how Obama is handling the job, up two points from last month, and 67% said they believed world leaders respected the US president, up from just 30% when the question was asked in 2006.

The country is heading in the right direction, according to 39% of those polled, up from 15% just before Obama took office. Republicans remained skeptical about the president, however, with only 31% approving of Obama's performance. The president's handling of the economy, foreign policy, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq won high marks, but some initiatives remain unpopular—58% of those polled disapproved of the bank bailout.

It's psychology more than anything else. President Obama has turned around the negative feeling in this country. He's given everything an impetus because he's very upbeat, like Roosevelt was. - Arthur Gilman, a Republican from Ridgewood, NJ

Hannity and O'Reilly keep trying to spin his approval numbers as plummeting. And some wonder why Faux Noise is considered a joke. Reply

The Repubs have a problem. They are still bitter and angry over the outcome of the election. Their hatred goes so deep that i seriously believe they would see the country suffer rather than work with President Obama. Hannity and O'Reilly are feeders of this ultra right attitude. Rush is the grand dragon minus the hood. Reply

I really don't understand this...the auto bailout failed, yet we're seriously considering another one. How does this lead to more approval? Reply

It's called leadership. When people know that the person in charge has the right plan and the intelligence to execute it, they follow. Washington, Patton, McArthur, Einsenhower, et al did not win every battle they fought, they made strategic blunders, but the people under them knew they had the right person in charge and followed them to eventual victory. If pox news had been around in 1776 or 1941, and these generals had been judged in the way the right wing is judging Obama today, we would probably be subjects of a European power instead of the country we are.
