Specter Defects to Democrats

(Newser) – Arlen Specter is jumping to the Democrats, leaving the party excruciatingly close to a filibuster-proof Senate majority, reports Politico. Sources say VP Joe Biden was key to the effort to recruit the Pennsylvania senator. “Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right,” Specter said in a statement. “I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans.”

Specter said his pro-stimulus vote angered so many Republicans he didn’t want to run in a GOP primary. He said he'd return any recent campaign contributions on request. The move bodes well for President Obama’s agenda, and could revive hopes of passing the Employee Free Choice Act, but it’ll also raise the stakes of the Minnesota race, giving Republicans incentive to drag it on longer.

I am disappointed that so many in the Party I have worked for for more than four decades do not want me to be their candidate. - Arlen Specter

Quote from Paul Krugman: "What strikes me, however, is the extent to which this is a self-inflicted wound.... we have a party that seems to be in a death spiral: the smaller it gets, the more it’s dominated by the hard right, which makes it even smaller. In the long run, this is not good for American democracy– we really do need two major parties in competition." ..... And a later comment that was interesting: "One possibility is that the GOP could get far enough down its death spiral that the Dems could split into two parties: one genuinely progressive party, and the other a Blue Dog, more pro-business party" http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.c.../

Exactly. This guy is no different than Joe Lieberman; a political opportunists. If I was a democrat, I wouldn't want this rat on my side.
