Dirty Ads Make Craigslist a Bad Citizen

By Kevin Spak,  Newser Staff

(Newser) – Craigslist ought to be prosecuted for promoting prostitution, writes David Coursey for PC World. By spreading across the country, the uber-popular classifieds site has brought “easy-access, pay-for-play communities where they clearly are not wanted.” Television was once famously called a “vast wasteland.” Well, Coursey says, sites like Craigslist help make the Internet “an even ‘vaster wasteland.’”

Once, “we spoke of the Internet in grand, visionary terms,” writes Coursey. But now we’re faced with “the dark realization that all the bad that happens in the world can come into our homes over the Internet.” Craigslist hides behind “freedom of speech,” but Coursey isn’t buying it. “I believe that Internet companies need to become responsible for the content they inflict on users.”

Craigslist needs to do more to be a good citizen. If it chooses not to do so, I will not cry when authorities make Craigslist an example.

Online services have for too long hidden themselves behind "freedom of speech" and court rulings that relieve them of responsibility for information posted on their systems by users. - David Coursey

I believe that Internet companies need to become responsible for the content they inflict on users . If they fail to do so, the Internet cannot possibly reach its full potential as a positive part of people's lives. - David Coursey

Craigs List also lists phishing scheme ads for employment too. Those they can't verify up front, but yes sexual services will still be around without Craig's help, but they make it easier than most.

No one "hides" behind the first amendment, How does one "hide" behind an inalienable right? If I own a firearm, am I "hiding" behind the 2nd Amendment, if I contest a speeding ticket, am I "hiding" behind my right to a fair trial? As to your inserting yourself into the role and function of our "Nanny," does the whole world have to stop at 9 o'clock because the 10 year olds need to be in bed by 9? That is tantamount to what you are proposing. As for my mind, it is quite open and undamaged, whereas yours couldn't be opened with a cluster bomb.

"Most X-rated sites, even those that actually do nothing but feature porn, have some kind of "wall" set up to keep minors out. Craigslist does not, nor does it even try." Craigslist certainly does have such a "wall". To access the "erotic services" section one must certify that they are at least 18 years old.
