Campaign Over, Mac's Mom Lays It Out

Share

(Newser) – Throughout the presidential campaign, James Rainey of the LA Times tried to land an interview with Roberta McCain. “They wouldn’t let me talk, thinking I don’t do the politics thing,” the 97-year-old says. “And they were right.” Now the gag order’s off, and McCain says she “loved every second,” of the campaign, even if she does think the media favored Obama. “You know, you don’t have to win everything to have a good life.”

The media is a big topic for the McCain matriarch. She’s not a fan of partisan talkers like Keith Olbermann or Rush Limbaugh. “Some of them talk like such fools,” she says. She’d like more scrutiny on President Obama, but only if it’s fair. “I am not going to say one word of criticism,” she says. “We are in the toughest times that I think we have had in history. And this country…better get together.”

Ha, then you should have read the interview the Daily Beast did a few days before the election. It was probably the most unpatriotic thing I'd heard in a while. I remember thinking she was quite a bigot; the cancerous sort of old, senseless American. She hated Obama, that much was clear as well. Why'd they have to give her so long to get her head screwed on straight, she was peobably even fed lines anyway

Sounds like a great mom from the early 19th century, probably a disappearing breed. She isn't overly critical, but gets her point across quite effectively. John McCain would have been better served by picking her over Sarah Palin. Reply

Now here is someone with whom I can identify -- an old-fashioned American with a sense of fairness and patriotism. If she'd been a part of her son's campaign, he could have won. But -- Obama did and she' supports him because he's our president. That's the way we should all think and leave this political partisanship way behind us. I love what she said about the pundits -- fools indeed ,who make fools out of those who follow them. Good story. Reply
