Former AG returns to Washington for Correspondents' Association fête

(Newser) – Alberto Gonzales will attend tomorrow’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, the Washington Post reports. Gonzales, a guest of the Houston Chronicle, will be hard-pressed to avoid members of a new administration that has all but vilified his actions as Bush attorney general. But, for a man under investigation both for the firing of US attorneys and legalizing torture, the dinner may be a chance to relive the good old days.

No Criminal Charges in Firing of US Attorneys

Justice Dept. won't press Gonzales case

(AP) - The Bush administration's Justice Department didn't commit any crimes when it fired nine federal attorneys in 2006, a two-year investigation has concluded. The internal report removes the possibility that former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who resigned in part because of the controversy, will face prosecution. Daily Show Jokesters Penned Obama Quips

No wonder he was so funny

(NEWSER) - No wonder President Obama got all the laughs at the White House Correspondent's Dinner over the weekend: his quips were written by Daily Show jokesters. Obama easily out-quipped Jay Leno with the funniest presidential material in two decades of the event, gushed Lloyd Grove in the Daily Beast , who was told by White House adviser David Axelrod that the jokes came from Jon Stewart's comedy henchmen. In memoir, Bush aide regrets not defending war to public harder

(AP) - Karl Rove says in a new memoir that the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq badly damaged the Bush administration's credibility and led to dwindling public support for the war. The former White House political adviser blames himself for not pushing back against claims that President Bush had taken the country to war under false pretenses, calling it one of the worst mistakes he made. The president, he adds, did not knowingly mislead the American public about the existence of such weapons. More»

22M 'Missing' Bush-Era Emails Reappear

Data won't be public for years, but may shed light on Iraq, Plame

(NEWSER) - Twenty-two million emails that the Bush administration had given up as lost have been found. Computer experts working for two advocacy groups that sued the executive branch in 2007 for not properly archiving its emails announced the messages were in fact mislabeled. The messages must be vetted before they can be made public, but when and if they're released, they may shed light on the run-up to the Iraq war and the outing of Valerie Plame as a CIA operative, Mother Jones reports.
