Obama Will Streamline Emissions, Fuel Rules for Autos

Federal standard replaces patchwork

Share

(Newser) – President Obama will announce plans for new national automobile fuel-economy and emissions standards tomorrow, overhauling and streamlining the current patchwork, sources tell Politico. The move will harmonize the CAFE standard and the EPA’s greenhouse-gas standard, so that struggling automakers needn’t fear the regulations moving independently. The announcement will also likely appease California, which had been asking for permission to institute its own, tougher caps.

Obama has secretly secured support from a variety of state governments and a huge array of automakers, including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and BMW. The plan would raise the economy standard for cars to 35 miles per gallon by 2016, 4 years sooner than required by law, the Wall Street Journal adds.

I applaud this, though I wonder if it's too little, too late. Reply

The next step will be to force drivers of older cars out of their vehicles through regulation, thus creating a hardship on lower income earners. Reply

While smog control is a good thing, man-made global warming is BS. I'm in the Green Car indistry and have been for over 20 years, so I can see the lies everytime the environmentalist lips are moving. Either they are lying or just plain stupid or simply evil... But then again misguided and too ignorant or confused to see the truth works just as well... Greed is another reason for environmentalists actions and the most widely spread sin of the eco-nuts. Besides that bit of info... MealerAMC will have the only Carbon tax, Cap and Trade exempt vehicle and home power source available unless someone wants to lease patents as we can't build everyone a car. Obama's plan is the same plan that has been kicked around for years and as Rahm and the Obamanites say, "Why let a good crisis go to waste?" They are evil and are killing the economy with the coming tax crisis to finish us off. Mealer American Motors Corp http://mealercompanies.com JL Mealer Reply
