New Punch-Out!! Is Classic Fun

(Newser) Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, was a “perfect combination of addictive gameplay and technological impressiveness,” Chris Kohler writes in Wired. In a new version for Wii, happily, the company has figured out "what made the original so compelling” and recreated it “in spades.” Sometimes, Kohler writes, “they do make ’em like they used to.”

The game, of course, “has basically nothing to do with boxing,” Kohler writes. It’s “a pure test of a gamer’s reflexes,” and as such players should just stick with the controller, though you can use the motion controls or the floorpad. Kohler’s only qualm is that the game doesn’t support the more comfy Classic Controller. All in all, it’s “a solid, addictive, finely polished game.”

It’s also fun to lose because the boxers are so funny. The original Punch-Out!! games, from a less politically correct age, were exaggerated parodies of ethnic stereotypes. The Wii game, far from shying away from its roots, kicks it up a notch. -
