Chow Down on the 'Gross-Food Movement'

Porkgasm and Bacone provide alternative to healthy eating

(Newser) – A new class of foodies is scoffing at calorie-consciousness and organic growing—what Robert Ashley dubs the Gross-Food Movement in Gourmet. A few tantalizing treats invented by the movement’s pioneers:

  • Porkgasm: a pig sculpture made from bacon, sausage, and ham, filled with smoked sausage, more bacon, and pork belly.

  • Taco Town Taco: the real-life version of a Saturday Night Live joke combines tortillas and beans with an egg-and-sausage-stuffed crepe, pizza, and a blueberry pancake, deep-fried and dunked in chili.
  • Bacone: egg, cheese, hash browns, and gravy with a biscuit on top, all inside a deep-fried cone of bacon.
  • Bacon Explosion: more—you guessed it—bacon wrapped around sausage and even more bacon.

Typical American reaction. Healthy food and being healthy is implied to be "elitist" or "effeminate" so we respond with this stuff. Has anyone seen that show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on Food Network? The host goes around the country visting all kinds of local spots that serve disgusting food in ridiculously large quantities. This is THE biggest single problem: over-consumption of everything and lack of attention to anything. This type of lifestyle has huge healthcare and energy/environment implications, but it's completely ignored.
