Supergroup is having fun, getting serious

(Newser) – Rock’s newest wave-makers aren’t so new, reports USA Today. Chickenfoot is a supergroup, but “not a pre-fab one. This all really grew out of friendships,” says bassist Michael Anthony. Anthony, along with fellow Van Halen alum Sammy Hagar, has been jamming with guitarist Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith for years, but they recently decided to make a real go of it.

“This might have grown out of a lark, but it’s not one anymore,” says a reporter of the band. Chickenfoot cites classic-rock staples from Led Zeppelin to Cream as influences; Satriani says, “That’s the thing about this band. We have so many shared roots.” Adds Hagar, “None of us needs to do this for the money or to prove anything musically, which is why it’s great. I’m getting re-inspired.”

if supergroup means a band comprised of 3rd and 4th line musicians with nothing better to do, then yes, this is a supergroup. but is it news? more like a press release, eh? who's paying?
