Taliban Buys Kids for Suicide Bombings

Share

(Newser) – The Taliban is buying children as young as 7 and turning them into suicide bombers, the Washington Times reports. The going rate is $7,000 to $14,000, a huge amount in Pakistan, where where the average income is $2,600. Pakistani and US officials lay blame for the practice on Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, who is hiding out in the tribal regions.

He has “turned suicide bombing into a production output,” a US defense official said, “not unlike Toyota outputs cars.” Sometimes, children are kidnapped and sold to Mehsud, and he distributes them to his own group or to other Taliban factions. The new practice “is the grim reality of the Taliban Frankenstein that now threatens to overwhelm the Pakistani state,” said an analyst at the Brookings Institution.

What is unusual is making these young fighters into suicide bombers. That was not common in Afghanistan, not even in the past. These children are brainwashed to believe things that are not even true. - Sher, former freedom fighter

the thing is we will never be out of the ME though. we have spent too much time over there, along with too much money to just up and leave.

I don't know... I don't believe we can change culture, especially while factoring in a theology that seemingly has no rational fear of death; you can't intimidate those who do not fear death - Taliban (Pashto - meaning students) solder's embrace it. But this story... it is way beyond anything I've ever been exposed to - Yes, there were the Killing Fields, Holocaust... The list, endless. But this, absolutely beyond rationalization - Without question, an abomination... How do you allow such things to continue, to be ignored? We are ultimately the causal effect...
