'Ghetto trash' directed at Obama's daughter

(Newser) – The latest racist screeds against the Obamas on a right-wing website have a new target: Malia. "Ghetto street trash" was just one of the ugly comments posted on the Free Republic site about President Obama's 11-year-old daughter after she was photographed last week wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a peace sign, reports the Vancouver Sun. A picture of Michelle Obama talking to Malia was captioned: "To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds."

The Huffington Post took Sun writer Chris Parry to task for slavishly reporting the cringe-inducing comments on the "paleo-site." The Free Republic first yanked the comments, then edited and restored some of them following questioning by the Daily Kos. Free Republic owner Jim Thompson eventually conceded on the site: "We should steer clear of Obama's children. They can't help it if their old man is an American-hating Marxist."

That's the sad thing. I remember when Obama was elected and everybody (right, left and center) was asking where this was signaling the end of racism in America. I think we have our answer now. Sadly, since Obama has become president, it seems that the racists are coming out of the woodwork. And by attacking the children you can see how despicable these people are.

The second Klan, begun in 1915, was a formal fraternal organization, with a national and state structure. Why don't you google the Black Panther Party and tell how they used violence to gain what they wanted as well. You can also join their ranks and get the same type of stuff you can from the KKK website, free speech for all her right?

@godawgs, at least it's a counter point, however I'd like to point out that the Black Panthers were only active for 10 years. Whereas the klan, and slavery and segregation of African Americans lasted well over 3 centuries. Further, the klan is still active to this day. Approximately 8 million slaves died during transfer to the New World. Between 1882 and 1968 there were 3437 lynchings of African Americans according to the Tuskegee Institute. Countless and untold instances of police brutality. I am not justifying the BPP's actions, but they only killed 15+. But you might argue that lynching was legal, well so is abortion. If you really look into it, the BPP just does not compare to the KKK, or white majority society of the time. The BPP were mere kittens in comparison.

@fondue the BPP is still going today, it has just changed its name to the New BPP. The issue isn't how long the groups were together racism has existed since the beginning of time, its that both groups use similar tactics to get what they want. The difference is one is villifed by most of America (KKK) while one is looked upon as heroes (BPP) by segments of the population when in the end they are both racist groups who depend on violence and threats of violence to get their message across.

@godawgs. If you KNEW anything about the BPP, you'd know their reason for violence was to STOP violence against their community. No longer would they allow cops to just run amok over them. Oh and if you BOTHERED to read anything besides propganda, you'd know that the BPP was about uplifting and PROTECTING its communities, as opposed to destroying others communities. Did you know BP provided breakfast to kids in the morning before they started school? Did you know BP want NO DRUGS in their community; if you were a (small-time) dealer you did it with special permission or on the sly. This is what made MLK's movement SO important:NON-VIOLENCE!!! Once a black person acts aggressively, every white citizen from the jim crow-era and earlier will say it's justification (read self defense, self preservation) to kill them, much as many in this country feel about "terrorists" in this country now: let's kill them! But non-violence combined with television and photographic imagery allowed many in this country to say "So why do we need such a violent response -guns, dogs, water cannons, batons, etc.- to people that seem to not be posing a threat, simply walking down the street?" Images of women being beaten, eaten and abused made more people rethink the society we have just come to accept. Learn something valuable one day.

@wwonder yeah they were so good at protecting their neighborhoods that they had to walk around with loaded rifles into courthouses. There were allegations of drug dealing and other acts that they were supposedly against (www.wikipedia.org) I just used the kokuaguy's references to read about them. What I find funny iwht your response and kokuaguy's is that you will defend an organization that is just as racist as the one that you are talking bad about. Also kokuaguy what do you mean by you are not surprised that i would stick up for the KKK. I am not sticking up for them but I am merely saying that if we are going to protect one groups right to free speech then we have to protect all groups rights to free speech.

I've been here more than 4 months, SPH, and I honestly don't remember Corona_Queen, or the effort to stifle "her" free speech. I am very curious about C_k, and I'm certain that you will never convince enough here to ignore "it" to spoil "its" fun. And I must admit, I find playing with C_k to be enjoyable and a way to entertain myself and occasionally some of the regulars here. Yes, it's pathetic, but it's true. For me the newser community is as much a social club as anything else, and I never did care for bowling alone. @ adapt-overcome, I have lived both in the South as well as in the North, to be honest there is a much larger KKK presence in the North Michigan for example has a HUGE KKK presence and much of the National leadership circles this area like sharks for whatever reason. This is the same situation that happened when ignorant hateful people attacked Sarah Palin's children. Whatever anyone's belief or hatred, they have to leave the children out of it. Politician's beliefs have nothing to do with their children. And yes I believe the racism problem in this country is only getting worse with a black president, it's bringing out the hatred in those who were able to keep their feelings quiet for many years. it's not okay to attack anyone's kids. and just as the people posting these comments represent a minority among conservatives, the attacks against palin's daughter's were a minority. most of the comments liberals made were not aimed at the kids, but at palin herself. but regardless, does it make it ok for these people to write these things? cause letterman made a nasty joke? if letterman jumped off a bridge, would these people follow him? two wrongs does not make a right. and i might humbly add that the democratic party is not selling itself as the "family values" party. the republican party is, so when they fail to live up to the hype they are preaching, it is only natural that they should be called on it.

@fondue look up any of the threads involving Palin on this site, the Daily Kos or any liberal website, and you will see what I am talking about. The letterman threads where in a nutshell that it was Palin's fault for having daughters and bringing them on the campaign trail with her but I see that doesn't count for the President. he takes his daughter's everywhere therefore using the logic from this very site his daughters are fair game, and everyone should just get over it. @lindamae - just because you don't agree with what someone says doesn't mean they don't have a right to comment. Also, what does being a virgin when married have to do with anything? What people need to realize is that teens are going to have sex. It will happen. The only difference between people like Palin's kid and the rest, are that the rest of teens are smart enough to use protection so they don't have to worry about kids. While I do believe that no one should attack the family of the people that are actually running, Palin's kid did bring some of the flak upon herself, as she willingly went out in public and preached abstinence only crap.

Just my two cents: CK, I've noticed that most Newser commentators give a thumbs up/down based on emotional response rather than a rational one. That's just human nature. So I must say that even if a comment has a nugget of truth in it, that nugget will be camouflaged by the hateful wording. If you want to serve your fellow conservatives well, best to adopt an ambassadorial approach. It's not so easy to hate an idea if it's presented well; on the other hand, (most) people will totally disregard/ angrily react to input that is wrapped in hostility.

Welcome back CK, here's a super suggestion: Hawaiian calzone * High fiber = at least 5 g of fiber per serving *Dietitian's tip: Instead of topping the calzone with pizza sauce, make your own tomato relish with fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil and oregano. Serve with a fresh green salad and assorted sliced fresh fruit. Serves 4 Ingredients 4 ounces Canadian bacon, diced 1 green onion, chopped 1 medium tomato, chopped 1/4 red bell pepper, roasted and chopped 1 1/2 tablespoons crushed pineapple, drained well 1 tablespoon fat-free honey Dijon salad dressing 1 can (10 ounces) whole-wheat bread dough, refrigerated or frozen 1/4 cup shredded mixed cheese, such as provolone, Parmesan, Romano and mozzarella 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 cup pizza sauce Directions Preheat the oven to 400 F. Lightly coat a baking sheet with cooking spray. In a large bowl, add the Canadian bacon, onion, tomato, roasted red pepper, pineapple and salad dressing. Mix well. On a floured surface, cut the dough into quarters. Press each piece into a circle. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough into an oval. On each oval, add the Canadian bacon mixture and 1 tablespoon cheese. Fold the dough over the filling, pressing the edges together. Crimp with a fork and place on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the calzones with the olive oil. Bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Top each with 1/4 cup warmed pizza sauce and serve immediately.

Where were all of you when Palin's 14 year old daughter was "knocked up by ARod" and lusted after by Spitzer - known for his using young teen aged prostitutes? Is hatred okay when applied to Palin but not when applied to Obama? I deplore both situations but if it was fine for the press to dis Palin's daughter, then it is equally right to dis Malia. Unless you want to say all kids are off limit - but then Obama didn't say that in Palin's defense did he so he must have supported it. How low our media has sunk. He was talking about the 18 year old, first off. Second off, Palin thrusted her own children into the spotlight whereas Obama tries to keep his children out of the papers and off the stage. Plus it was a joke and Letterman didn't mention race. They're two totally different things.

Amen. It was cute when it was against the Palin's kids. However the MSM didn't add this was hatred by the left wing. Instead it was all Palins fault because she took her children on trips and paraded them around. But when it is against the Obama kid, its the hatred of the right wing. Of course, it is okay for them to take their children on trips and parade them around.

ALEXANDRIA, I am sorry but Obama put his kids on CENTER stage. He actually used them as a segment to introduce himself at rallies and the DNC convention. No problem with that, but its the same thing Palin and every politico since Kennedy has done in Mass media.
