(Newser) – The list of Emmy nominations, out today, is full of familiar names. One surprise: Family Guy is nominated for best comedy series—it's only the second animated show to get a nod in the category, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Fox stalwart is up against Entourage, 30 Rock, The Office, Flight of the Conchords, Weeds, and How I Met Your Mother.

30 Rock led the comedy pack with 22 nominations, the AP reports. Mad Men snagged 16, including best drama. The TV movie Grey Gardens got 17 nominations. Among the overlooked fan favorites were True Blood and Battlestar Galactica. Neil Patrick Harris is slated to host the Emmys, which air on Sept. 20.

Is Family Guy technically even a TV show? There's no character development, maybe two interesting characters, no storylines, terrible/lazy animation and voice acting, lazy writing catering to people with ADD (random references to fill time), vulgar/easy comedy to cater to people with low comedy standards (like Apatow movies). To me it's just a collection of pop culture jokes. It might as well be a standup routine. Reply

And Seth McFarlane is still the highest paid writer/producer in television history...I know money doesn't tell the whole story, but that's telling me something is working for the show. Reply

Great, an ad populum argument. By that logic, something is working for NASCAR, Jon & Kate, Bill O'Reilly and Fox News, Leno, Dane Cook, and all the other stupid stuff Americans like. Which is why I said it caters to people with low standards and most Americans fit that category. There's a good reason the show was cancelled twice, because their writing is so bankrupt. They keep coming back because stupid people demand it.

Forget Family Guy. When are they going to realize that Entourage is a terrible, unfunny show. Rich douchebag Hollywood types get high, sleep with girls, and act like douchebags? How droll. Reply
