(Newser) – Angela's Ashes author Frank McCourt is battling skin cancer and meningitis and is near death, his brother tells the New York Daily News. McCourt, 78, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1996 memoir about growing up in poverty in Ireland, is under hospice care, says his brother Malachy. "His faculties are shutting down. He is not expected to live."

Ahhhhh enough death! My dog died a week before all the celebrities starting dying and it has been horrible on me for some reason. Every time I hear about someone dying now, I just feel like my heart is breaking in two. Doesn't matter if they are famous or not. I even cried this morning when I read that story in the news about the stupid girl in New York that put a kitten in an oven and left it to die. Can everyone please not die for a couple of weeks so I can (hopefully) recover? Please?
