We Need More Armstrongs, Fewer Jackos

Apollo astronauts exemplify what US celebs should be

(Newser) – It’s unfortunate that American celebrity typically comes in the form of “uninteresting, detestable, loud, or unaccomplished people” like Michael Jackson and Paris Hilton, writes Bret Stephens in the Wall Street Journal. What society needs is more heroes like the Apollo astronauts—celebrities with “the right stuff,” which includes courage and patriotism, but whose “essential ingredient is personal modesty.”

Take Neil Armstrong: He barely talks to the media, “never fails” to give credit to those who helped put him on the moon, and keeps his politics and personal matters to himself. “This is not the way we live now. Modern culture has severed many of the remaining links between merit and celebrity,” Stephens notes. “A century from now, who will be remembered as the early 21st century’s Neil Armstrong?”

Not enough has been written about the Apollo astronauts and, in particular, about their place in the history of American character. That’s a pity: What they have, or had, is something Americans could use. - Bret Stephens

How can anyone say Michael Jackson is “uninteresting, detestable, loud, or unaccomplished". that is obsured. It's even worse that Matt put him in the same category as that worthless piece of trash Paris Hilton. Give me a f'ing break Reply

Perhaps this is a case where Michael Jackson's name is used to get attention? Certainly, he's not in the same class nor even category of celebrity as Paris or Seacrest. Why compare him unfavorably to others who have reached the top of their profession? Too bad the author dipped so low for effect.

While I do wonder sometimes at who our society values (ie/ the recent multi million dollar contract secured by Ryan Seacrest), I do not agree with this article. Yes, we should hold high and value heroes like Neil Armstrong, but to say this about Michael Jackson just after his passing is gauche. Not to mention that at least he had talent, unlike Paris Hilton.
