Obama's Poll Numbers Dive

(Newser) – The public is rapidly losing faith in President Obama, new polls show. His overall approval rating is below 60%—a USA Today/Gallup poll gives him 55%, putting him 10th among the 12 post-World War II presidents after six months in office. A Public Trust Monitor/Politico survey finds 54% trust Obama, down from 66% in March. Only 42% trust the Democratic Party.

On some key issues, the numbers are even worse. As many as 50% of respondents disapprove of Obama’s efforts on health care, and 59% say his proposals call for too much government spending. Meanwhile, only a third believe the stimulus package will ultimately help them. But Obama can take solace in the fact that Republicans poll even worse—only 36% say they trust the GOP.

I guess now though they are just numbers, like how the stock market didn't mean anything when it was crashing but now that it is going up we should all pay attention to it as a sign that the economy is recovering right?

If he's doing the job I expected him to do when I voted for him his poll numbers woujld have to go down. All that matters is that he gets 51% in 2012. I'm not losing any sleep over that and don't expect to. I do expect that we'll have Single Payer by then or be much closer to it. Keep up the pressure Rep. Kucinch !!!

Excellent point about the media making it out to be more than it was....unfortunately, the media are fickle. If a pundit feels that trashing Obama will be the popular move, he'll/she'll make it. If they taste blood in the water at that point, it's all over.

@shannonals these polls and approval ratings sure seem to mean a lot to the left when the numbers are going thier way. I haven't met a person that took this poll, but I never met a person that took a poll when his approaval ratings were high either. So does that mean that the numbers don't mean anytyhing for Bush or Cheney and their approval numbers becasus the left loves to throw out those numbers or what about the polls of people who id's themselves as conservatives? when it was like 21% i saw that poll number all over this site, but i guess these polls don't mean anything, we'll see if they are still meaningless if they start to come up.

He has given us speeches nearly every day, gone to more countries, trying to erase the bad feelings agains US. And how do we repay him. By doubt and naysaying. Correct Medicaid/Medicare the system is full of corruption and bloating, work on cutting the prices for drugs in this country, and allow you to get insurance anywhere in the country. this will create the competition that is needed to keep the costs down.

It's not surprising that his poll numbers have dropped. When a new charismatic personality comes, seemingly out of nowhere, onto the political scene, as did Obama, people tend to ascribe their own political views to him. If he speaks in platitudes, not making it really all that clear, where he actually stands on the issues, he can be all things to all people, so to speak. Once in power, as he starts to make decisions, etc., he going to displease some who initially liked him. Reply
