(Newser) – If their mission was to please critics, the adorable spies of G-Force have failed. Here's what the critics saying:

Director Hoyt Yeatman should be ashamed, writes Ty Burr in the Boston Globe. “If you can’t squeeze a decent movie out of talking 3-D superagent guinea pigs, you may as well throw in the towel and consider a career in insurance.” The film’s tired, imagination-free spy gags make it feel like “a Xerox of a Xerox.”

The “aggressively stupid” movie demonstrates “the low regard Hollywood has for the intelligence and curiosity of children,” writes Dan Kois for the Washington Post. The visuals are good, but it’s “as if the producers bought dialogue at some kind of bulk joke outlet.”
Roger Ebert, in the Chicago Sun-Times, musters only sarcasm, saying the movie is an “inoffensive 3D farce” that “will possibly be enjoyed by children of all ages.”

In the New York Daily News , Elizabeth Weitzman calls the film a "down-the-middle, by-the-numbers fantasy, in which no one is too quirky or interesting or challenging in any way." Still, "there’s no shortage of viewers ready to embrace an old-fashioned, guilty-pleasure romance."

Extremely Loud Can Be Extremely Annoying

Critics split on emotional 9/11 movie

(NEWSER) - Critics are split right down the center on Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, an emotional movie about a young boy's quest to deal with his father's death on 9/11. It's currently at an even 50% on Rotten Tomatoes , drawing reviews like these:

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close might have also added and Fairly Obnoxious," writes Tom Long of the Detroit News . "Mixing the horror of 9/11 with a cutesy story about a boy's unlikely quest just comes off as crass," making this "the kind of movie you want to punch in the nose."
"No movie has ever been able to provide a catharsis for the Holocaust, and I suspect none will ever be able to provide one for 9/11," writes Roger Ebert . Certainly this one doesn't. "This plot is contrivance and folderol." Oskar's on-foot journey through New York "is so preposterous, we're constantly aware of it as a storytelling contrivance."

Streep Wows as Iron Lady

Helps redeem otherwise mediocre film

(NEWSER) - As a biopic, The Iron Lady is nothing to write home about—but critics are blown away by Meryl Streep's typically excellent performance as Margaret Thatcher:

The film contains "little sense of the outside world, the human cost, or the ripple effect of divisive government policies. It is a movie that gives us Thatcher without Thatcherism," writes Xan Brooks in the Guardian . But Streep "is the one great weapon of this often silly and suspect picture." She offers "a masterpiece of mimicry."

Young Adult Painfully Funny

Charlize Theron stars in Jason Reitman, Diablo Cody film

(NEWSER) - Young Adult, from the writer/director team behind Juno, stars Charlize Theron as a selfish thirtysomething returning to her hometown with the belief that she can win over her high school boyfriend—who's now married with a kid. Critics love it, though it can be hard to take:

The film "systematically demolishes a china shop full of shopworn sentimental touchstones about—for starters—high school, small-town life, heterosexuality, Minnesota, and the capacity of human beings to change, learn, and grow," notes AO Scott in a New York Times ' Critics' Pick review.

Fassbender Wows in Shame

Critics mixed on Steve McQueen's sex addiction tale

(NEWSER) - Shame tells the story of a sex addict’s joyless need for physical pleasure, and Michael Fassbender offers a stunning performance, critics say. But they’re divided over whether the film has much else to offer:

Fassbender’s work “may lay claim to this year’s title of most outstanding performance in a mediocre movie,” writes Dana Stevens in Slate . “This sleek-looking but curiously unfocused character study never quite gets down to the business of showing us who Brandon is, but boy, does Fassbender make him into a captivating enigma.”
