Obama Slips in New Polls

(Newser) – Two big polls are out with the same general conclusion: President Obama is losing support for his health care overhaul among the public, and his approval rating is settling in to mere mortal levels. A Wall Street Journal/NBC survey puts his approval rating at 53%, down 3 points in a month and 8 points from April. That's comparable to George W. Bush shortly after his contentious 2000 victory. A New York Times/CBS poll has him at 58%, unchanged from earlier this month but down 10 points from April.

As for health reform, the WSJ poll notes that 42% now think Obama's plan is a bad idea, vs. 36% who think it's a good idea. Numbers were evenly split in mid-June. More troublesome for Obama is that people who already have insurance are getting negative, with the number of those naysayers rising 10 points to 47%. The NYT poll finds that Americans are generally growing more concerned about how any changes would affect them personally as critics ramp up attacks against the cost of reform and portray it as a government takeover.

First of all, I do contribute to society. I hold a job and pay my taxes just like you do. And as a result, I have to pay for every uninsured person's costs just like you do, even though I'm not doing it through a higher premium. Additionally, you wouldn't need to pay so much (and thus be less bitter) to cover uninsured people if there weren't any to begin with. Since you're so concerned with how much you spend, let me ask you: would you rather continue paying a higher premium to cover uninsured americans each month to a private company or would you rather pay a lower amount in taxes and help someone other than yourself for a change?

The very first time that I came to Newser I made some high minded comment about Watergate. A little while later when I returned someone just said Dweeb what an idiot you are. I actually cried because it was my first internet comment. Then, I really without my own idea of myself read the comment and realized that it was idiotic. I didn't stop being an idiot but I learned that to expect everyone to love my garbage is ridiculous. This forum of freedom is so important that to want rules will just take it away. I agree that threats of physical harm are way beyond any one person's tolerance level--but they are word, threats, stupid things that we say because we're emotional beings. If I thought for one moment that those words could really do you physical harm, I'd fight as hard as anybody. But we are a hidden bunch here and even a violent threat is as meaningless as the verbal threat of idiocy. This space right here is helping me learn, grow and accept things that are a bit unattractive about myself. Censor it and we all just lose.

I believe the reasons the president's ratings have fallen is that the middle is so incredibly fickle. They can't hold a thought or idea--as soon as the right attacks the very reaon they voted for Pres. Obama, they think, "Oh, dear. That might be true. Perhaps the president is trying to kill me." Whoa baby, the right-wingers started this bailout stuff in full crisis mode while Bush was still in office.He tried to hold off the disaster until after he'd left office to put it in the next President's lap, but it was too screwed up to wait.If he had waited, the world economy would have collapsed. Conservative, deregulatory policies allowed that to happen, though plenty of democrats helped to vote in those conservative deregulatory policies. If he had nationalized the banks temporarily and helped home owners at the ground level, which I would have predicted he would have-in other words, acted more liberally, he would have gained even more in the polls. Again, he is losing in the polls because up until now, he is acting far too conservatively, and you guys still call him a socialist.

See, I totally agree with that. Except where you say center/ right, I say beholden to no one. I want a President who has no agenda he must fill for the rich who put him there. I want one who has the freedom to make up his own mind without worrying that he just lost a jillion toward that next election. I'd like one who thinks that my existence is as important as his ambition. Basically, I want a President. And while I voted for Obama, I can say that he isn't living up to the ideal which was his platform.
