Toshiba's First Netbook Is a Step Up

Boasts big keyboard and touchpad, long battery

Share

(Newser) – Toshiba, late to enter the low-end but lucrative netbook field, has finally rolled out its $400 entry, and Walter Mossberg finds that it beats competitors by solving several key problems: It boasts an easy-to-use keyboard, a long-lasting battery, and a large touchpad with big buttons. “The keyboard design resembles that on Apple’s MacBook Pro laptops—big, raised keys with lots of room in between, and good vertical movement,” Mossberg notes in the Wall Street Journal.

Toshiba says the battery lasts “an impressive 9 hours and 5 minutes,” and Mossberg finds that even while running a range of battery-draining functions, the computer stayed alive for “a whopping 6 hours and 32 minutes.” What it doesn't have is a pronounceable name—it's dubbed only the NB205-N310—and other weaknesses include slow WiFi and streaming video, poor speakers, and a long start-up time.

Slow wifi and streaming are probably key features of a small netbok. It is a NETbook afterall. Although I must admit, the battery life is pretty incredible. Reply

Has anyone actually bought a netbook? They don't seem versatile enough to drop $400 on. No DVD drive, not much of a processor...? I am missing the point. Reply

It's mostly for really technologically inclined people. I have a ton of friends at Georgia Tech who have these but they're pretty much the only friends I know who has them. It's all about cloud computing with these things, most everything can be done online in terms of entertainment and socializing. This is a fancy e-mail checking machine pretty much.

I have one, but i don't recommend them. As Stevey pointed out the problem with most of them is the slow internet; i can barely stream youtube videos. And the NETbooks that can actually make full use of the Net are around the price range of a more capable laptop. I would definitely advise anyone interested in these to wait. The technology will get there soon, but right now they're just not worth it. Reply
