i was about to write that the pool personnel was right but i figured out that no, this is cultural discrimination. the only reasonable explaination of the prohibition for dressed people to bathe is that they are referring to dirty clothes from the street, maybe unclean. but a costume is an indument, and i dont think that they bathe ass-naked there. i agree that burkas are tools of segregation for women but this is not the correct way to help women. a woman may spontaneously want to dress that stupid costume, and if you care you can discover that in some more advanced moslem countries some women reclaim their traditional dresses as signs of their culture. weird but legitimate. the only important thing is being sure that if a moslem woman in a westrern country wants to, she can drop the 'burkini' for a topless tanga without harassment from her family or group. if that woman is really oppressed, chances are that she will not show in a pool any longer because her husband-father etc will forbid her to do so., period. so the problem shall be removed from our eyes, our conscience will not be disturbed, but shall remain. sometimes things made in perfect good faith are detrimental to the very persons they should help. it is better that: 1 if a woman wants, she may go dressed as she likes- even in burka. 2 if a woman can't because of family - religious pressure, this kind of prohibitions will just punish her and hide the problem - what if the males in her family decide that for her good she better stays at home ? swim suits are unclean. they fill the pool with laundry soap residue. its better to swim naked. Reply

first of all, the burka is part of a culture. it doesn't have to be written down for it to be important to a people. but what is so unsanitary about a full clothing swimsuit? i gotta watch out for my wetsuit i guess Reply

And there's the fact that hygiene is not limited to clothing. Someone with an infection could wear the "proper" bathing suit and jump right in. I've no idea whether infection carries through water, but doing it is still *nasteh*... Reply
