Mag's Gutsy Photo Hits With Readers

By Will McCahill,  Newser Staff

(Newser) – In showing that it has the stomach to use plus-sized models in its pages, Glamour has provoked a torrent of positive reader reaction, blogger Margaret notes on Jezebel. A photo of a woman with a bit of a gut hanging over her underwear accompanied a story in the September issue, and editor Cindi Leive’s inbox has been jammed since, she writes:

“The emails were filled with such joy,” Leive writes, “joy at seeing a woman’s body with all the curves and quirks and rolls found in nature.” Adds size 12-14 model Lizzi Miller: “When I read them I got teary-eyed! I’ve been that girl, flipping through magazines trying to find just one person who looked a little bit like me. And when I didn’t find it I would start to think there’s something wrong with the way that I looked. When J. Lo and Beyoncé came out and were making curves sexy, I started to accept myself more.”

I’d loved this photo at first sight myself—we’d commissioned it for a story on feeling comfortable in your skin, and wanted a model who looked like she was. But even so, the letters blew me away.

yes oldgoat...exactly what he said. i'm going to translate what you just said "don't see it as accepting reality, but more as convincing yourself that your fat, lazy ass is justifiable." pilot, i wish i would have read what you wrote more carefully before i left my long comment. you summed it up very well. you don't reward mediocrity. fine if the majority of our population are lazy or "too busy" and don't want to get in the shape of the ppl on the cover of magazines. i can live with that...hell i'd probably still sleep with your less than perfect body, but that doesn't mean i think you belong on the cover of a magazine.

what is wrong with you people? good looking men and women are on the covers of magazines and featured in movies and other forms of entertainment because they deserve it. they work hard to look like that. 500 sit ups a day, hours in the gym, jogging for miles. Every fat ass and pathetic, depressed american feels that they are being shafted??? give me a break. get off your tubby ass and work out, go for a walk, stop eating fast food. i don't wanna see some half naked chubby chic's gut hanging out in the grocery isle. the magazines aren't using beautiful women to convince everyone that they need to look like that, they are doing that to sell the god damn magazine. i swear to god...ppl need to snap out of this twilight zone type trance. common sense should be part of the curriculum in our public school system. you don't reward lazy ppl with thousands of dollars and the cover of popular magazines...it's simple.
