O'Reilly: Stewart's Off the Rails

'Secretly liberal' Fox News strikes back

Share

(Newser) – Bill O'Reilly hit back at Jon Stewart last night, saying the Daily Show host had gone "off the rails" with recent jokes about Fox News. Stewart Wednesday night sarcastically called Fox "secretly liberal," because commentators like O'Reilly are now doing all the things they attacked liberals for in old clips Stewart showed gleefully—supporting boisterous protesters, and whining if they're criticized. In response, O'Reilly said Stewart is pandering to his 45% liberal audience, the Huffington Post reports.

O'Reilly called Stewart's audience the most liberal on TV, and said that as a satirist Stewart thrives on cheap shots and distortions—which he labeled a "frightening" problem because young people in his audience take Stewart seriously as a news source. "He continues to dance down the liberal yellow brick road," O'Reilly scoffed.

funny that Oreilly is worried about frightening a audience that takes someone seriously as a news source. Stewart can make a point better with his satire than Oreilly ever will by his ranting and raving at people he doesn't agree with. Reply

I've never heard a Fox 'head' say 'Hey folks, it's all in good fun and we are doing this in the name of comedy'. What Stewart does is obviously telegraphed as political satire (it's on a comedy network, for fuck sake), whereas Fox purports to be an agency of actual news and credible, well-sourced opinion. There's no way they can, in all seriousness, justify taking any kind of high road against The Daily Show. It shows its hand honestly and openly. Fox does anything but. Reply
