(Newser) – The silly season has reached its peak: Der Spiegel reports a lost kangaroo hopping through the western German countryside. Locals have spotted the stray marsupial on a highway and a sports ground, but nobody has been quick enough to catch it. With no zoos or kangaroo farms reporting a lost kangaroo, the origins of the animal—certainly not native to Germany— remain a mystery.

(NEWSER) - Just months after almost 60 suspected al-Qaeda militants escaped from a Yemen jail , another 10 to 15 militants broke out of another Yemen prison early today. (NEWSER) - 10:1 odds he's a big fan of Shawshank Redemption: The Marine Reservist accused of shooting at the Pentagon and other military sites last year tried to dig his way out of jail, reports the Washington Post . He didn't come close. Officials at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center described Yonathan Melaku's wall-chipping progress as "minimal." They charged him with damaging his cell in an attempt to escape and possessing an instrument to aid escape. They didn't say what that instrument was, however. More»

Militia attacked prison to free leader

(NEWSER) - A militia attack on a prison in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo province of Katanga has led to nearly 1,000 prisoners escaping, reports the BBC . The militia aimed to free a leader of the group, Gedeon Kyungu Mutanga, who had been sentenced to death in 2009 for his role in the longstanding violence in eastern DR Congo. "They opened fire on the police and the military guards, killing two," said the Katanga information minister. More»

(NEWSER) - What makes the kangaroo hop? That’s just one of the questions answered by international researchers who’ve decoded the genome of a kangaroo species, the BBC reports. The genome research team—the first to be led by Australian scientists—sequenced the genome in 2008 but finally completed its analysis of it and published those findings last week. "It's been a huge project," says one scientist. "I'm from Australia and it was going on when I was an undergraduate there 10 years ago." More»

Broom-wielding Outback woman fights off attacking roo

(NEWSER) - The Australian Outback is home to millions of kangaroos—and some very tough old ladies. Phyllis Johnson, 94, is recovering in a local hospital after being attacked by a fully grown red kangaroo as she was hanging up her washing. The animal rained down kicks before she managed to fight it off with a broom and escape into her home. Police had to pepper spray the animal twice before it could be captured. More»
