Honolulu Mulls Body-Odor Crackdown

City delays vote barring smelly people from riding public transit

(Newser) – Honolulu's city council has delayed voting on a measure to bar stinky people from public transit, reports the Advertiser. The ordinance would crack down on people with “odors that unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system.” Part of the reason for the delay is the fact that only the state legislature can pass criminal statutes.

Under the proposed law, odor-emitters could be forced to pay a $500 fine or go to jail for 6 months. “I think it is a bit discriminatory to people but being a bus rider myself I think it would be helpful because some people do have really bad body odor,” one woman tells KITV.

i so heartily agree! where i work women AND men come in with excessive amounts of cologne and they leave a trail of the scent that lasts seemingly forever in the hallway. what is worse, when i touch a door handle that they have handled i have that cloying odor on my hands until i can leave the hall to wash my hands! it STINKS! literally and figuratively.

Sadly, greg, there's no such thing as a "whaft" of cologne/perfume anymore AND today's colognes/perfumes are more transferable than in the past! I have dreaded hugging someone I really liked because I did not want to smell like him or her after the hug.
