Drudge's Play of Bus Beating Draws Critics

Share

(Newser) – A fight on a school bus in Illinois is generating lots of attention across the country. A videotape of the incident shows black teens beating a white classmate while some onlookers cheer, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Police are investigating but have backed off an initial statement that the attack was racially motivated. The story has picked up national steam in part because Matt Drudge led with it much of the day on his site.

That decision has brought out Drudge's critics, who say he's once again race-baiting. "Is this national news?" asks Jeffrey Goldberg in the Atlantic. Drudge's motive is "fairly obvious"—he's pushing "the message is that white people ought to be very afraid of black people, starting with the President." At Raw Story, Ron Brynaert wonders whether Drudge is "openly trying to start a race war."

Ron Brynaert wonders whether Drudge is "openly trying to start a race war.".....Many Blacks already view the Race war as started, it began with the great Birther Movement when the whites in the Republican party hid behind a crazy rumor to justify their hatred and fear of Black...I as a Black man am just stating what I know on how a large part of the Black community feels at present, we have always been low on your level of the world and we have surpassed being a bit tired of your hypocrisy ... Now get busy thumb me down for saying what many Blacks feel Reply

I am not going to thumb down, but what i will ask is why is any incident that involves a black person, Gates arrest, the President, etc racially motivated but an incident that involves a white kid getting beat up by black kids not racially motivated?

Why do you assume it's hatred and fear of him because he's black? Repubs didn't hate and fear Colin Powell or Condi Rice. Maybe it's because of their BELIEFS, not because of their skin color. Geez. I hate this ridiculous race card nonsense. You demean the fight against real racism.

@godawgs - The school bus fight may or may not be racially motivated, more information is needed. The criticism is pointed at Drudge for elevating this singular incident to national consciousness in a society that witnesses scores of such incidents daily, at a time when race has become a "trigger", and GIVEN the Drudge's political orientation and activism.

@dax I can go with that as a fair assessment of the current situation, and the source that is involved does lead you to believe that the coverage is going to be slanted for a certain point of view.
