Drudge's Play of Bus Beating Draws Critics

(Newser) – A fight on a school bus in Illinois is generating lots of attention across the country. A videotape of the incident shows black teens beating a white classmate while some onlookers cheer, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Police are investigating but have backed off an initial statement that the attack was racially motivated. The story has picked up national steam in part because Matt Drudge led with it much of the day on his site.

That decision has brought out Drudge's critics, who say he's once again race-baiting. "Is this national news?" asks Jeffrey Goldberg in the Atlantic. Drudge's motive is "fairly obvious"—he's pushing "the message is that white people ought to be very afraid of black people, starting with the President." At Raw Story, Ron Brynaert wonders whether Drudge is "openly trying to start a race war."

@godawgs - The school bus fight may or may not be racially motivated, more information is needed. The criticism is pointed at Drudge for elevating this singular incident to national consciousness in a society that witnesses scores of such incidents daily, at a time when race has become a "trigger", and GIVEN the Drudge's political orientation and activism.

How can any of you think that Black people would not judge whites as racist...Look at the Great American history... Mistreatment of Blacks did not end with the Civil war as much as you would like to think it did. The KKK, Skinheads and many others are still alive and well. This is the country that ran secret medical testing on Blacks using syphilis until 1972, not 1772, the White America ran a secret program to sterilize Black among other minorities as late as the mid 70's as well. Look at the treat ment of Blacks as late as World War II and even after. Look at Racial Profiling and the large perscentage of Blacks still forced to live below the poverty level.... Yes, you would indeed enjoy if Blacks didn't mention the Race Word or Race Card as you like to call it but Black People have to face the very recent history of racial bias daily as well as their children and this causes the young to be very hurt and very angry and then each time they llook up a Black President is finally elected and whites start carrying guns to town hall meetings, talking crap about him being born in Africa.. Don't sit on your white ass pretending Race isn't a factor and do not blame the Black Community for distrust you yourself condone and help build By ignoring or attempting to ignore white Americas sins and transgressions toward Blacks you openly promote hate and distrust and if you refuse to acknowledge that you are indeed blind and most probably a Racist

It was about why and attack on a white kid by black kids isn't automatically considered racially motivated but almost any situation that involves blacks is automatically considered racially motivated. No one can deny the history of the country, and your other arguments are valid, but what do you think about the story at hand?

Looking at just the small samples of White treatment of Blacks as late as the mid 70's how can anyone think the issues would simply go away in a few years? Hell if some other race had treated the whites in the same manner then perhaps their might be a bit of understanding? Race issues will not go away overnight when the problems have persisted for over 200 years. I tell you what UrUndertaker. based on my families experiences with "your" wonderful people, I question everything. My father lost his life at the hands (murdered / robbery) of a black man in December of 1980. There was witnesses but they never found the guy. Then in 1992 my sister, who was a freshman honor student at a Georgia University and who I dearly loved was killed because of a Black Mans negligence. So when I see your president screwing this nation up it reminds me of some f-in painful life lessons. So speaking for myself you can shut the F-in up. Guys, I as a Black person am simply attempting to explain how many Black people who may not have Internet, may not have many of the social advantages shared by many in the white community view their world because you can't possibly imagine what they endure. You grow up with a fear in you that you may upset a white person and wind up on the wrong side of the law when your only crime was being a black kid, you look at your uncles and Aunts who endured much hardship due to the White Americans outlook towards Black and you guys still do not understand no matter how I attempt to draw attention. I am saying, it took until this year for Congress to even vote to say "we are sorry" it has been over 200 years of bad history and that piece of paper has very little meaning to a majority of Blacks who do not even know it was voted on. We were routinely used for experiments because of our skin color and we still live in fear it is still happening, hell look how long for us to find out the first time. So a kid is on a bus, a white kid shoots off his mouth to a Black kid who is already wired due to this type treatment then boom, you got a war on a school bus. All the kids need their rears spanked but that will not solve the underlying problems and instead of our talking together to see what each of us can do to resolve these long standing issues you think ignoring the pains of all this history will simply fade away. How can it fade when the very first represenative from what they deem as a Black Community is called a traitor, accused of pure garbage by Birthers and then some white guy screams YOU LIE and White people make that guy out to be a hero. We are talking about a deeply scarred community of people and I see very little to be done to resolve the outstanding unspoken issues that are very much alive in the Black community and were and are caused by an uncaring white community and I say all this to attempt to try and get a group of white people to try hard to understand the pain of a large group of Americans who have worked very hard to make this country a great country it is or at least was.

It seems to me that people on both sides of this issue tend to make sweeping generalizations, and give the impression that they have been appointed spokesman for their entire community. When I was a little I had to get my parents to explain racism to me, because I couldn't work out the logic. Of course now I realize there isn't any logic to it. Don't get me wrong. I have very strong negative feelings about certain groups, but they aren't racial they are ideological. One more point. I have never heard a racial slur from any of my friends, and wouldn't tolerate it if I did. Please don't lump me together with the skinheads and the hicks.

First of all the "race war" has been going on for way longer then this presidency! Feeling and doing what is right are two different things. You still have condemned the attack, and you justify it through elborate rationalizations. The truth is that the 'race war' or whatever would be best diffused by Christian principles. It always cuts through the fog like a ho tknife through butter. I dislike Drudge intensely and voted for Obama, but, I do belive this attack was racially motivated. I think the white kid was dating a black girl and that is what provoked the attack. Now, if we are going to have hate crime legislation then it needs to work both ways. Had this been a black boy being beaten by whites with cheering going on by other whites, AND it was discovered that the black boy was dating a white girl, then all hell would break loose. Fair is fair and I think that is probably what Drudge was pointing out and it probably has nothing to do with "being afraid of Obama." That is nonsense. You say that if there is hate crime legislation it should work both ways. I agree, and as far as I know it does. I remember hearing of an incident some years ago, where some black people, after viewing the movie "Mississippi Burning", were so enraged by it, that upon exiting the theater, they spied a white man, and yelled something like, "there's one now, let's get him", and proceeded to assault this white man. As I recall, they were charged with a hate crime, as well they should have been, in my opinion.

To me it seems like Drudge just puts up what HE finds interesting on HIS site. It doesn't have the kind of editorial oversight of a news channel, so while you don't get the formulaic "mainstream media" coverage everyone complains about, you also get some things that aren't really news, and some that are biased by his political views. I think we can agree this is the former, the latter, probably, but I'm not quite sure. I am sure he's not "openly trying to start a race war", and I'm kindof annoyed the leftwing pundits didn't just say "ok, this isn't news, and maybe drudge is a little bit of a conservative nut, moving on".

Over and over, we hear about how whites are the ones full of hate and prejudice. The truth is, that blacks victimize whites on a far larger scale. When is comes to race-based violence, whites are on the losing end. The reasons for this are that blacks have been empowered, excused and endorsed in their hatred and whites have been vilified, shamed and marginalized by political correctness. Reply

As Bob Dylan so famously expressed it, "the losers now will be later to win, for the times they are a changing", and they have changed, since the days he composed that poetry, set to music. But Martin Luther King never endorsed the idea that those of African descent should indiscriminately revenge themselves on those of European descent. It was by MLK's advocacy for peaceful change, that the times did change.

Imagine the uproar if it was a black kid being beat up by a gang of white kids. So now Drudge (whom I don't much care for by the way) draws attention to this incident and of course it simply must be racism, and worse racism directed against the president of the United States. What nonsense! The media has long latched on to stories of white-on-black crime (whenever and wherever they might be be found) but ignored the much larger daily reality of black-on-white crime. I guess if the rise of the Internet it means anything it means that the news (and thus perceptions of reality) can no longer be controlled by a mere handful of powerful, self-appointed media moguls. I've read the Drudge Report for years. Its true that Drudge's bias towards the right wing borders on the toxic, but he is clearly just a rabble rouser at heart like Limbaugh who wants to make money on any controversy, no matter how harmful to the body politic. His money comes from advertising revenue. I never see his ads because I use a great browser, Mozilla Firefox with AdBlocker. I also surf there less and less as time goes by, namely because his biases are so obvious and offensive. Other people have told me the same thing. He does pull out the odd story that other people miss, though. Reply

Doesn't matter this much is true: 1. try finding posts from blacks that denounce the beating - you probably won't 2. any time a black is accused of a possible hate crime, evryone tries to make it go away; when a person of European decent is accused, everyone tries to make it stick. Repeal hate crimes legislation. The effect is unequal protection in the eyes of the law. Its time we sent a message to minorities: we have good intentions towards you, but we won't be tyranized by you.
