(Newser) – The UN Security Council today adopted a US-drafted resolution that outlines much of President Obama’s plan to rid the world of nuclear weapons. The president’s attendance at the meeting of heads of state—just the fifth in UN history—underscores the centrality of the issue for his administration. Though the measure passed unanimously, the US was not able to convince Russia and China to include Iran and North Korea by name, notes the Washington Post.

It's great for the president to go and give the speech. It's a heck of a lot more powerful if the other countries with nuclear weapons say, "Okay, it's also the direction we wish to go." - Jeffrey G. Lewis, New America Foundation

i have to agree with godawgs on this one. it's a step in the right direction, but we need to single out countries that don't act accordingly, and in this case, it's Iran and North Korea.

while a step in the right direction it can hardly be labeled a success, if we can't the other countries to name certain countries such as Iran and N. Korea in the document.
