Gaultier Designing Collection for Target

It debuts in March, probably inspired by Madonna

Share

(Newser) – Lovers of cheap chic, rejoice: Jean Paul Gaultier is designing a collection for Target that will hit stores March 7, reports Women’s Wear Daily. Gaultier is third in the chain’s Designer Collaborations series, following Alexander McQueen (collection inspiration: Leila Moss) and Anna Sui (collection inspiration: Gossip Girl). This line will be inspired by the American woman and pop culture. “We all know who that really means,” writes Amy Odell for New York. “Madonna.”

We're hoping for pointy-bra tops, leotards, overalls, mesh crop tops, corsets—all the things chicks secretly want but can't in good conscious pay more than Target prices for. - Amy Odell

Since the creation of 'ready-to-wear' by the 1920's, the 'high-fashion' operations of all the couture houses has been the prestige-maker for the sole purpose of fomenting an exotic branding-identity to enable the marketing of an inferior line of highly profitable ready-to-wear that was not better, nor any more exotic than the no-name variety (only more expensive for the tag). That girls and women around the world coming up on 100 years have been suckered by this cheap name-branding mechanism is a tragedy here reaching its nadir with cooperation between Jean Paul Gaultier and the shamelessly artless and plebeian Target. I'd rather say the phenomenon already reached its low point previously when Alexander McQueen, a real 'artist', marketed directly to Target. Gaultier just represents stage two of the complete fashion humiliation of the American woman. Reply

Gaultier was costume designer for the movie "The Fifth Element". Those were some outstanding duds. Remember Milla Jovavich's (Leeloo) bandage suit and Bruce Willis' orange top? Coming to a Target near you. Reply
