Bachmann Urges Uprising Against Health Reform

She calls for Americans 'by the carload' to descend on DC

(Newser) – Michele Bachmann wants Americans "by the carload" to come to Washington next week so she can lead them through the halls of Congress to oppose health care reform. "This is our liberty and tyranny moment," she told Sean Hannity on Fox yesterday. "This is about patriotism and manning up." The Minnesota congresswoman plans a news conference at noon Thursday, after which she'll lead the masses through House office buildings, reports the Hill.

"I'd love to have every one of your viewers to join me so we can go up and down through the halls, find members of Congress, look at the whites of their eyes and say, 'Don't take away my health care.'" And one office in particular will get special attention. "We need to pay a House call on Nancy Pelosi and tell her what she can do with the Pelosi health care plan."

I'd just be happy if they showed up by the millions and got an up close look at Washington, and how their country's being run. Let them see K-street. Let them follow the lobbyists through the halls. Let them see how politicians, even good ones, are corrupted by easy money and sway in their home districts. Let them see how much time legislators actually spend considering the laws they put into effect. Let them see who actually writes those laws. Let them see it with their own eyes, so that they cannot ignore it, or forget it. Let them judge for themselves the reality of Washington. I'd wager they'd be tarring and feathering, if not downright lynching, a lot more than one side of the polarity. Washington would be a depopulated land.

@mainlander - That's not entirely true. They're trying to give health insurance to everyone. If they wanted everyone to actually have health care, then they would pass a law that gives everyone access to a doctor or hospital, and thus, avoid the health insurance industry entirely.

We? 80-85% of the entire country HAS health insurance. Of the 15-20% without, at least 15% and here illegally. Add all these people with a public option and I guarantee, heath care will need to be rationed by necessity. There are barely enough health care professionals to go around now. A public option will also guarantee thousands of physicians will quit leaving us with fewer doctors to go around. Is this what you really want?

I wish there were smarter, more articulate people who represented the anti-health insurance bill viewpoint. I don't like that people will have to be *forced* to buy health insurance. That hardly seems like an increase in choice, yet that is what the health insurance bill will do. There will not only be a penalty if you do not purchase health insurance, but there will also be a penalty if you refuse to accept the penalty for not purchasing health insurance. There are plenty of young and/or healthy people who have no need or desire to spend money on health insurance - why should they be punished for not doing so?

Being healthy is its own reward and a great way to save money :-) @jjrn - Yeah, you're right. Many times, I feel like we're not even debating each other. Let's just take a step back and understand what she's trying to urge us to do - go to the capitol and lobby for yourselves. If you want the health insurance bill to succeed, you should be lobbying for yourselves. If you want something else to succeed - ditto. I don't know what her intent is, but striking down a call to lobby for yourself (regardless of viewpoint) is not something to be derided. Reply

This is a PR stunt, what she is doing is asking people to show up and do what she is elected to do, represent the people, well, those people are already correctly represented in the correct % in Congress. @emptycalm - I faced a similar problem when I was attending college. Many of the best students who were out studying, having fun, creating, and doing productive things didn't have time to be involved with their student body government. But then we were left at the mercy of those students who had more than enough time on their hands to climb the ranks, get in bed with the administrators, and push for legislation (i.e. tuition increases) that was not in the best interest, nor was it representative, of the students. I know it stinks, but not having enough time isn't really a good excuse with the way our government works. The only way to maintain our freedom (and please don't read in to "freedom" as a buzz word in my sentence) is to accept that we are going to have to be involved in our government, otherwise we will be at the mercy of power-hungry people with too much time on their hands.

@gene - Maybe it is a PR stunt. But she isn't advocating anything illegal or too clever. Anyone could take her message and use it to serve their own needs. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to get 100 people who support the health insurance bill to go and lobby at the Capitol. I wish more politicians pulled this kind of PR stunt (Democrat and Republican) because at least it's a PR stunt that empowers individuals.

Meidcare is not provided to the poor just for being poor. It is provided to those over a certain age, and those who qualify based on being too handicapped to work. Medicare does not pay even for those covered if they have private insurance. Being poor alone will not get you medicare coverage.

Seriosly the Dem health plan is so bad it is beyond a joke. I would actually prefer a fully publicly owned system. If you are goning to do something do it properly. Lets remember people that nothing is free and that such a system is funded by taxpayers. Personally i believe a system simular to what they have in Australia would be appropriate. This would involve tigher regualtions on insurance providers, the creation of a public system that provides basic cover for all and allowing for people to choose whether they want to buy private insurance. This provides the consomer with choice, doesnt spend their money on their behalf while maintaining a minimum care standard for everyone. Reply

If the Republicans wanted to fix healthcare, this is just the sort of thing they would have pushed for. I wouldn't have supported it, being in favor of the Canadian system myself, but it sounds like an old fashioned GOP sort of plan back when the parties agreed on a goal of good government generally but disagreed on the how. I don't agree that the Dem plan is a joke because there isn't a single plan, but at this point I'm just hoping they don't cave to the insurance cos. so much that we end up worse than where we started from.

Toon, its nice for a change that to get a reasonable yet different point of view instead of simply recieving negative comments. Im critical of the Dem plan due to their lack of unity on the issue. Even if you wanted a full system i believe it would be a smarter option currently based upon the sceptisism, economic conditions etc to introduce a minimal system and show naysayers that it can work and that somethings are better run by the government ie the military. Then say Obama gets elected again 2012 he could then create a full public system. Its a lot easier to increase funding and make changes at a later date when youve got the basics and the foundations of a system down pat and the economies improved and opposition reduced. While i wouldnt be in favor of a full system i am open to being proven wrong on this issue. Also Toon i particurly enjoyed your statement about how the "parties agreed on a goal of good government generally but disagreed on the how" it rings true 100%.

It is this view which has hurt the Republican party badly...the view they must "moderate," they need to be more like Democrats.Well, if they are more like Democrats, why are they needed? Only 20% of this country call themselves "Liberals," while 40% call themselves "Conservatives." You can disagree with ideals, but the numbers are what they are. jjrn13, politics is about degrees, the republicans cannot just drift further right believing that they need to have a big gap between them and there opponents otherwise there is no purpose. Thats crazy talk and that sort of mindset is responsible for the bad blood (boardering on hatred) between conservatives and liberals at the moment. It never used to be so bad, both hardcore DEMs and REPs are now niave idiots attacking each other with every chance they get. You gotta look to include as many people as possible, The GOP needs to get back to its core roots ie smaller goverment, greater freedom ,fiscal resposibility and learn to change with the times as it had done up untill George W. Bush instead of fighting them. Do you really think that guys like Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt and Reagan would run today the exact same policies as they did when they were in office? Obviously they wouldnt however their core beliefs would not change. From 1968 to 1992 every election bar one was won by a republican because they appealed to many people both north and south with moderate and sensible views. People want public health care therefore it should hapen, the way in which the system works should be the debate not the issue itself. Americans want a public health system because they have seen it work in other countries, the fears of socialism on this issue are a joke. Do people actually think that one morning after we get public health cover suddenly well become the soviet union. Some industries do not work well under private control, it all depends on the goals of the firm. Currently most of our roads are socialist, why? because there is no financial incentive for a private company to build roads for everyone to use. Simular principles apply to health cover, private insurers are in the business of making money and not caring for patients.

Honest Health Care Reform: (1) Tort Reform: stop frivilous lawsuits, stop defensive prescribing, SAVINGS? BILLIONS. (2) Insurance Portability: nationwide Ins. companies competing, allow groups to form for the expressed purpose of buying coverage (currently against the law!) SAVINGS? BILLIONS (3). Insurance Reform: make law banning them from dropping clients d/t illness, period. (4) Fraud: WE DON'T NEED AN ACT OF CONGRESS TO GO AFTER AND FRAUDULANT CLAIMS. Note, fraud is ONLY an issue with Medicare and Medicaid AND NOT an issue for private insurers? What does that tell you? Create govt run health care, create more fraud. Apply these few principles WITHOUT dismantling our current health care and health care gets immediately healthier. Reply

Insurance portability is the worst idea I can imagine. It would be a race to the bottom as one or two states passed laws allowing junk insurance with no oversight and all policies would be based out of those couple of states. And I doubt fraul only happens with Medicaid, doctors who cheat one system would also cheat another. The prevention methods are different. When its private fraud we may not hear about it while with a public program it enters that realm of public policy and get publicity.

there is no health care to be taken away...the US is the only nation of the 27 industrialized nations to not have some sort of national health care plan. the US standard of living is now around 12 in the world. 12,000 + gun deaths per year, lousy technology...internet is really slow compared to other industrialized nations, etc. the health care system here in the US really sucks and she wants to keep it that way. great job, hope she does not get sick anytime soon...oh wait, she is rich and the rich in the US have options...I forgot. 80% of Americans have healthcare and are happy with it. Massive expansion of government to control everyone's health care choices and expenses is a crushing political power grab. Health care analysts and experts assert that tort reform, insurance portability and high deductible policies would lower everyone's costs. These measures would allow coverage of those who cannot afford insurance or have pre-existing conditions. These would be covered through direct insurance subsidies and risk pools. Destroying the good in our health care system through massive government controls and legions of new bureaucrats is a victory for certain politicians and no one else. Reply
