It's About the Jobs, Stupid

The US needs to create work for Americans

(Newser) – The US has to shake up conventional thinking and create jobs for out-of-work Americans, writes Paul Krugman. Our current misguided thinking—as evidenced by unemployment north of 10%—isn't so much a jobs policy as GDP policy. "If you grow it, they will come," goes the philosophy. Get the economy humming, in other words, and the jobs will follow. While that's normally sound thinking, "these aren't normal times."

At the risk of raising the hackles of the Glenn Beck contingent, the US should consider a jobs program along the lines of the New Deal, Krugman suggests in the New York Times. If that's too unpalatable, at least strengthen worker protections or give businesses more financial incentives to avoid layoffs. Something, anything, before the damage is irreparable. "Long-term unemployment is already at its highest levels since the 1930s, and it’s still on the rise," Krugman warns.

We need to start doing something more than, and different from, what we’re already doing. And the experience of other countries suggests that it’s time for a policy that explicitly and directly targets job creation. - Paul Krugman

One thing the economists of the 1930s finally realized. You can have a thriving "capitalist" economy with 90 percent unemployment. In fact, it is easier to control inflation and conduct good monetary policy when most of the citizenry is living in abject poverty. The only problem is, when that happens the country becomes politically unstable and you have things like revolutions.

While my wife was shopping last night, I spent 20 minutes checking the "Made in..."labels on the racks of clothes. 17 countires were represented, and only one item in the store was from the USA -- nail polish. Keep buying these goodies and your neighbors stay out of work. Demand and support USA goods. They are out there if you look for them. Everything starts with the consumer. We can't cry about jobs if we continue to buy offshore!

A New Deal approach used to replace unemployment benefits for certain people in certain hard hit regions wouldn't be a bad idea at all. In fact, it could even be successful.
