(Newser) – The 2010 Ford Fusion midsize model has won Motor Trend’s car of the year award, one of the most sought-after in the industry. Ford’s reboot of the Fusion model impressed judges with better fuel efficiency, an upgraded engine, and a new interior. Among the finalists were the Camry and Accord. The Fusion already is the best-selling car built by an American firm and the 10th best-selling car in America overall, the Detroit Free Press reports.

It's no secret I'm a Ford guy, and I've owned many Fords over the last 35 years that have well exceeded 100,000 mi and more with just basic maintenance. My wife's Windstar (built in Canada, BTW) on the other hand, has had more than its share of problems. My mom owned a Freestyle (based upon Volvo mechanicals) that was a bit of a headache, too. But given my experiences, I'm very happy with my American built Fords. Pardon me, I think I'll take a little drive in my '64 Galaxie 500 that's only pushing about 300,000 miles on the odo...

Hmm, I dunno about this. I'm with the Detroit CEO's in their private jets thinking we should make bigger SUV's and pickups. The world will wake up and grow to like them. Surely . . . .

easy there soldier... I'm not sure what you mean by "beating all of japan for the last two years", but Japanese car sales have most certainly outpaced those of American companies for the last while with the emergence of global markets and especially in the last 2 years with the global financial debacle seriously affecting the US. I have owned countless Honda's and Toyota's and, as long as you take care of them, I have found they generally are very reliable. American cars are not the same story.. my parents purchased an Escape 3 years ago and have nothing but problems, everything from the alternator to serious corrosion. Thankfully it has all been on warranty, but to date there have been over $15000 worth of repairs on a $40000 vehicle, all under 100 000 km's... It's no secret that Japanese engineering and efficiency can produce a better car for the same dollar as an American manufacturer. Although this Fusion looks very nice and flashy, I would be very interested to see how it's doing mechanically after 100k or 200k km's.
