Investigators release sketches, jewelry in bid to ID victims

(NEWSER) - Long Island cops released new information yesterday as they continue to press their hunt for as many as three serial killers who they believe murdered at least eight women, a man in woman's clothing, and a toddler. Five of the victims remain unidentified, and police provided sketches of two of them in the hope that someone will know the victims, which may help lead police to the killer, reports Newsday . Investigators believe the unidentified toddler was the daughter of one of the murdered women, and displayed photos of earrings and bracelets worn by the little girl at a press conference. Deputy marshal also wounded in St. Petersburg shootout

(NEWSER) - A wanted man hiding in an attic sparked a shootout with authorities, allegedly killing two officers and wounding a deputy US marshal. Officers were attempting to arrest Hydra Lacy Jr, 39, on an aggravated battery charge in St. Petersburg, Fla., this morning; officials believe Lacy was the first to shoot. Ultimately more than 100 rounds were fired, the AP reports. Lacy was found dead in the attic after being barricaded inside for hours, during which police shut off the home's electricity and water. $125K reward for info; more than one gun was used in attack

(NEWSER) - Police in Washington state are hoping the wife of suspected cop-killer Maurice Clemmons can help them find her husband. Officers were warned to today to be on the lookout for Nicole Cheryleen Smith, possibly driving a green 1997 Mazda Millenia to Arkansas. Police have posted a $125,000 reward for information on Clemmons after chasing down numerous leads, including a standoff last night and this morning at the suspect's home that proved fruitless. Cites drug dispute; 'my bro has a conscience'

(AP) - The brother of a Georgia man charged with slaying his father and seven others in a mobile home insists that 22-year-old Guy Heinze Jr would never harm his family, and instead speculates that a drug dispute could have prompted the killings. "I know my brother didn't do this. My brother has a conscience," 16-year-old Tyler Heinze said yesterday outside the rural cemetery where seven caskets topped with roses were resting atop freshly dug graves. More»

(AP) - Boxer Arturo Gatti's death was ruled a suicide by Brazilian police today, and a judge ordered the release of his wife, once suspected of killing the former champion. Investigator Paulo Alberes says authorities decided Gatti killed himself July 11 while at a seaside resort. When asked if police had determined the case was a suicide, Alberes said "yes," and offered no details. More»
